Hannah is one of my favorite women in the bible. There is something about her that resonates in me, and connects me to her struggle to conceive. Many of us at one time have wanted to birth something and struggled. Whether it be an actual baby, ministry, company, blog-what have you, how many times did you see everyone else do it with ease, while you struggled to get it off the ground?
When we meet Hannah, she is what they would consider “barren”. Having a baby was difficult for her, and back then there were no IVF treatments, you just had to depend on God to either bless your womb, or pray your husband loved you enough to stay married(fun fact: the more kids you had...the richer you seemed to be back then). Hannah didn’t feel complete, she did not feel as if she was a worthy wife to her husband because she could not give him what his other wife so easily could. (Fun fact: Elkanah loved him some Hannah hard, so she was definitely the favorite of the two!). Penniah, the sister wife, knew she could get preggers easily, and she threw it in Hannah’s face every chance she got. It got to the point that Elkanah would give Hannah extra to make up for what she obviously lacked.
Let’s pause right here and dwell on this: God’s timing is not our timing, and we will live in despair because what should come easily doesn't. Think about it, women are created with reproductive systems to carry life. We are born with it, yet countless women struggle to have a baby. We are born with purpose, yet many of us struggle to birth it. Sometimes, it’s not our time. Sometimes, we need extra support and help, and sometimes...we have to look at other avenues that will help our purpose thrive and come into fruition.
I see other women starting ministries, speaking to thousands, and writing books, and I’m over here looking stuck. I often wonder if I’m made for it, did I misquote or mishear God? Am I qualified to do this? Am I just crazy to think anyone would listen to me talk about God and who He is in my life? The answer to those questions are yes I am, no I did not, and nope, these folks going to get this good news! LOL!
Yes, we all want those blessings, those special things that we know God has for us, but we must have patience. We must trust that God has not forgotten about us. We are on His mind, and He is divinely sculpting our purpose for His glory. In the end, Hannah sought God, gave her unborn child to God, and in return God blessed her with a beautiful baby boy.
