Big God take little god

Big God take little god

“Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the Lord. The God who answers with fire, he is God.” 1Kings 18:24

There is a rap song about how, “Big bank take little bank.”It is in regards to having a bigger, wealthier bank account, and how you obviously can out-buy anyone with a small one. In the same way, the Lord God can out-source any idolatry god that some worship on a daily basis. In our scripture the prophet Elijah is challenging Ahab to see which god is bigger, greater, and can do what only one of the gods can do. By the time we meet him in this text, the Israelites are worshiping a god named Baal, and are not trying to do right by the Lord God. Baal was an idolatry god, meaning it was worshiped as something created by those who thought it had as much power as the Lord Almighty.

Back in those days if you didn’t believe in God, you believed in something. That’s a scary thought to have, yet I think of many of us today. There are so many other “entities” that will try hard to prove that you don’t have to believe in God,but just to believe in something. Now, I respect others and their beliefs, yet I trust the one true and living God for I have seen Him work in my life and the lives of others. However, there are many present day baals in our lives that we are unsuspectingly worshiping. Lifestyles of others, social media, even some relationships can take on an idolatrous being if we are putting our trust in it and not in the source of our strength.

Elijah challenged Ahab to see which of the 2 gods could answer with fire if called upon. He let Ahab and the people go first. They set up their sacrifice and began to call on baal to answer them. They danced around, calling on him, cutting themselves(crazy right?), and nothing happened. Not a thing. Not even a “I got you sign” from their god baal. Then Elijah prepared his sacrifice, and called the people near so they could see. Elijah called on God and boy did he answer. He answered with fire, and immediately the people turned from baal and fell face down in worship to the Lord God.

So often, we expect to look to other things and people to do what only God can do. Only God could have come down and touched that sacrifice with fire. Only God could have given David the strength to slay Goliath. Only God could have been with the 3 Hebrew men in the fire, and only God could have saved wretches like you and I. God is the power and source of what we need in our lives. We can look to others, social media, food, sex--what have you, but it will never have what we truly need in it. We need God everyday to cover us, and not just when things are not going our way, but when things are also going good. He is the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End, He is the I Am. Big God will always take little god.
